Zona Maco, Mexico City: SOPHIE REINHOLD, PEDRO WIRZ

Feb 9 - 13, 2022
Booth B112

At Zona Maco 2022, we present small and large paintings by Reinhold, which will define the booth. In her typically humorous and satirical manner the artist responds to her surroundings, creating subversive narratives of historical, social, and moral themes. Reinhold’s artistic practice is versatile and complex. Visual facts are fragmented and do not reveal their whole identity. Moreover, each painting displays a different notion of finish: some works indicate purely geometric compositions, and whilst other works show traces of the artistic process, a third group reveals motifs, both in and out of focus. As a result, by embracing an unresolved and open-ended style, Reinhold is highly receptive to the theoretical and speculative side of artistic creation. She plays with seemingly paradoxical ideas within and across various paintings and drawings, yet her practice does not reveal any sense of uncertainty but rather an ever-strengthening poetic quality.

On the other hand, Swiss-Brazilian artist Pedro Wirz draws reference to forms of co-existence between humans and non-humans, the decay of ecosystems, the systemic devastations of biological, ethnic and cultural diversities. Moreover, he has been concerned with issues of natural science, arts and crafts, systems of knowledge, and the contemporary contexts of folklore. His sculptures as well as wall-objects display an unusual aesthetic and sense of otherness. These fantastical installations are underlined by a complex craftsmanship and a careful combination of organic and artificial materials. Personal items and found objects, drawing reference to identity, cultural history and their behavioural patterns, are fused with ‘findlings’ from nature.
